Melbourne is filled with incredible museums, cafes and street art – but for me personally, the best thing about Melbourne is its alternative side!
1. Shrine of Remembrance
One of Melbourne’s most recognizable landmarks, the Shrine of Remembrance is a tribute to Australians who have served in wars. Initially dedicated to World War I, it now pays homage to all Australian soldiers who have made sacrifices for their nation.
The site hosts annual celebrations of ANZAC Day (25 April) and Remembrance Day (11 November), featuring an escalator that climbs to the top balcony for spectacular views over Melbourne’s skyline.
2. ACMI
ACMI is Australia’s national centre for moving image and an esteemed cultural institution. It features an array of captivating exhibitions, workshops and events sure to enchant guests.
In 2009 ACMI underwent a $40m redevelopment that involved the redesign of its functional layout, public spaces and an exciting new centrepiece exhibition. This endeavor was spearheaded by award-winning Melbourne architects BKK and experience design firm Publicis Sapient/Second Story in collaboration.
3. Degraves Street
Degraves Street, a pedestrian laneway connecting Melbourne’s fashion precinct to Flinders Street Station, is one of Melbourne’s iconic laneways.
A narrow street lined with tables under market umbrellas and cafe canopies, often described as having a Parisian or European flavor.
Enjoy an array of bars, cafes and restaurants here. Carlton’s Pidapipo is a must-try for gelato enthusiasts while Little Cupcakes’ tiny doorway will have you drooling over their sweet treats.
4. Degraves Street Alley
The narrow laneway connecting Flinders Street and Flinders Lane is often filled with coffee-drinkers, workers taking lunch breaks, and art admirers. It was named in honour of pioneer merchants William and Charles Degraves who arrived in Melbourne from Hobart in 1849.
This street links with Campbell Arcade and DegravesPlace, where the entrance to Flinders Street Station underpass is situated. Here, you’ll find many art-themed shops such as zine shops and handcrafted jewellery and accessories stores.
5. The Spleen Bar
Spleen Bar has long been a go-to spot among Melbourne locals for its affordable drinks, delicious snacks and relaxed atmosphere. Situated at the top of Bourke Street, this popular spot hosts regular music nights and live entertainment throughout the week.
Melbourne is also home to one of Australia’s best free comedy nights, held every Monday at 8:30pm. These free events feature acts from renowned comedians like Wil Anderson, Fiona O’Loughlin and Dave Hughes alongside Australia’s up-and-coming talents.
6. The Nicholas Building
The Nicholas Building is one of Melbourne’s iconic Art Deco landmarks, designed by Harry Norris in 1926 and an outstanding example of ‘Chicago Style’ architecture popular at that time.
The building’s winding corridors lead to a vibrant creative community of artists, designers, jewellers and makers. Recently listed for sale – tenants and the local community banded together to save it from developers.
7. Arts Centre Melbourne
The Arts Centre Melbourne is Australia’s largest performing arts complex, boasting world-class music, theatre, dance and opera performances. Situated by the Yarra River along St Kilda Road – one of Melbourne’s main thoroughfares – it extends into Melbourne Arts Precinct.
This complex stands out with a striking gold, silver and white spire designed by architect Roy Grounds – it serves as an iconic landmark in central Melbourne.
8. Royal Botanic Gardens
Royal Botanic Gardens are one of the city’s most beloved green spaces, offering visitors a wealth of surprises around every bend. Here you’ll find year-round events and dining, as well as stunning natural sights.
Established in 1846, these 38 hectares of landscaped gardens lie along the Yarra River and boast trees, lawns and lakes. There are nearly 50,000 plants displayed within 30 living plant collections.
9. Melbourne Museum
The Melbourne Museum, situated within Carlton Gardens, features an array of exhibitions that celebrate Victoria’s culture and natural history. From prehistoric creatures to living forests, skeletons and artifacts – there’s something for everyone at this iconic museum.
Since 2000, the Melbourne Museum has been home to an innovative building designed by Denton Corker Marshall that seamlessly merges science, nature and humanities for an engaging museum experience.
